An Important Step towards the Dundas & Wimbleton/Old Oak Traffic Light!

GEAT NEWS!  On May 13, Toronto’s Transportation Services division officially recommended that a traffic light should be installed at this intersection. (Report here: http://app.toronto.ca/tmmis/viewAgendaItemHistory.do?item=2022.EY32.11 )  The proposal will go to Etobicoke York Community Council for a vote on May 27, 2022.  Our petition was submitted in January, and I have no doubt that your signatures and support were what made this happen!

Please contact your Councillor Stephen Holyday and encourage him to vote YES on this urgently needed traffic light!
    He can be reached at
    416-392-4002 or  councillor_holyday@toronto.ca

This is a HUGE step forward -- now let's take it over the finish line and get this built!!!

    BACKGROUND:
The intersection between Dundas, Wimbleton and Old Oak is very problematic.
Many people would like to cross Dundas here to access the new Humbertown Park, Kingsway College School, St. George's Church, Humbertown Mall, etc.   However Dundas is VERY dangerous to cross here due to the high speed of the traffic, the width of the street, and the lack of traffic lights or crosswalk.  This intersection is in the middle of a 1.3 km stretch of Dundas with no safe crossing places.   It is also very difficult for motor vehicles and cyclists to turn left at this intersection.

We want the City of Toronto to install a traffic light at Dundas/Wimbleton/Old Oak.
Doing so would prevent injuries and deaths, advancing the City's Vision Zero goals.  It would also facilitate left turns and make this neighbourhood much more pleasant and improve quality of life.

Please add your name below if you agree!

There have been previous efforts to make this happen, for example:
www.toronto.com/news-story/43873-dundas-west-intersection-under-the-microscope-again/.  However in light of the City's current goal to eliminate all traffic fatalities, we think it is time to try again.

UPDATE November 2021:  The City of Toronto is making changes to The Kingsway just north of Dundas:
https://www.toronto.ca/community-people/get-involved/public-consultations/infrastructure-projects/road-reconstruction-safety-improvements-on-the-kingsway/ .     In general, these changes will help make Dundas more functional and safe and so we applaud them.

Regarding the Dundas & Wimbleton/Old Oak intersection, there is bad news and good news.
The GOOD news is that "the City is investigating the basis for a traffic signal at this location and traffic studies are anticipated to start this fall."   This is exactly what we have been pushing for!

The BAD news is that the  concrete island on Dundas (on the left side of  the photo above) will be removed, whether or not the traffic light is installed.  This island is a small place of refuge for pedestrians trying to get across the desperately dangerous street.  The Better Dundas Coalition calls on the city to install a traffic light, and to NOT remove the concrete island unless and until the traffic light is in place.

Please take a look and let us know your thoughts!

For more information, please contact Noel Semple  or betterdundascoalition@gmail.com. Do you have any ideas or experiences or information regarding this intersection?  Please let us know!

The Better Dundas Coalition consists of people who live on or near Dundas Street West, between the Humber River and Islington Avenue.
We want the City  to make it into a “Complete Street,” which is safe, pleasant and efficient for all its users.
